Abu Musab al-Zarqawi Buried In Iraq

BAGHDAD - Iraqi officials say slain terror al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been buried in an undisclosed location in the country.Iraqi National Security Adviser Mouwafak al-Rubaie made the announcement Sunday.  The U.S. military confirmed the burial but declined to give more details.

Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, as well as Zarqawi’s family, had called for his body to be returned to his homeland of Jordan for burial.   The government in Amman had refused the request for security reasons.

Meanwhile, violence continued in Iraq Sunday.  Iraqi officials say two people were killed and at least eight wounded in a car bomb attack in central Baghdad.

A reporter for VOA’s Kurdish service says two insurgents were killed in a clash between police and gunmen in the town of Rashad, 40 kilometers south of Kirkuk.

The reporter says three U.S. soldiers were injured in a roadside bomb attack targeting a military vehicle in the northern city of Kirkuk.  There has been no comment from the U.S. military.

Separately, police say a Shi’ite lawmaker survived an assassination attempt after a roadside bomb missed his convoy.  Iyad Jamal al-Din was leaving his house in the Karrada district when the blast occurred.

The attack was the second in two days against a member of parliament.  Gunmen kidnapped a Sunni legislator and seven of her bodyguards Saturday in Baghdad.

The largest Sunni Arab bloc in parliament threatened Sunday to boycott the legislature until she was freed.

Also Saturday, at least 66 people were killed and more than 100 others wounded in a car bomb blast at a busy market in Sadr City, a Shi’ite district.
