CONROE, TX (ANS) – Leland and Kathie Fleming of Conroe, Texas, USA, started home-schooling 19 years ago. At that time, with few families teaching their children at home, they had to look hard to find information and support.
As they home educated their growing family, they naturally developed a life-style of helping other interested families get started too. With a natural love for people and kids, they often found themselves offering counsel and encouragement to other home educators.
Today Leland and Kathie have successfully graduated three children, and are still teaching five others in various grades. They continue to offer support to other home-schooling families, and have found a new venue to help people “in a bigger way.”
On Monday September 4th, Leland and Kathie will have their first online radio program available on their web site at www.homeschoolingradio.com. The first show will have as a special guest Larry Van Den Berg, who has a web site that connects over 7000 home-schooling families world-wide. Listeners can click and listen to the interview right away, or download the program to hear at their convenience. A new show with a different guest will be posted on the web site every week-day morning.
Leland and Kathie are part of an increasing home school movement in America and around the world. The growth rate of home-schooling in America is estimated between 7 and 15 percent per year, now representing 2.2 percent of the population, or 1.1 million students. Home education by parents is also on the rise in Australia, Canada, France, Mexico, South Africa, and United Kingdom.
Leland and Kathie’s web site provides free listings for home school support groups and events, a home school resource directory, and a message board. As well, they are seeking home-schooling moms and dads to write articles on various topics. They also offer a free subscription to a weekly E-newsletter. “We want to be a source people will find convenient to use. We will offer a wide range of topics, from teaching tips, curriculum choices and learning styles, to laws, information and current news affecting home-schoolers.”
Leland says, “We don’t hold ourselves up as experts, we just want to be facilitators to get important information to the home-schooling community world-wide.”
