LONDON - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown says Britain is sending more troops to Afghanistan to help the country recover from years of conflict.

Mr. Brown made the announcement Monday in London at a joint news conference with U.S. President George Bush.

Mr. Bush thanked the British leader for the additional troops.

Prime Minister Brown also said Europe is prepared to increase sanctions on Tehran, if Iran fails to work with Western countries on differences over its controversial nuclear program.

The two leaders say they discussed various issues at their meeting today as President Bush concludes his week-long trip to Europe.

Later today, Mr. Bush and Mr. Brown fly to Belfast for a meeting with Northern Ireland’s First Minister Peter Robinson and his deputy Martin McGuinness. Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen will also meet with the U.S. and British leaders.

Mr. Bush began his day Monday by having breakfast with his old ally, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who is now a special representative to the Middle East peace talks.

President Bush’s trip has also included stops in France, Italy and Germany, as well as Slovenia where he attended the annual U.S.-European Union summit.
