BEIRUT - U.N. officials say weapons that exploded in a Lebanese area considered a stronghold for the militant group Hezbollah are a “serious violation” of a U.N. resolution.

The U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) says the resolution that ended the Israel-Hezbollah war in 2006 specifies that “unauthorized assets or weapons” are not allowed in certain areas in southern Lebanon near the Israeli border.

Lebanese officials said the weapons exploded Tuesday in an abandoned building in Khirbit Silim, a village near the Israeli border, but that no one was injured in the blast.

Investigators said the building may have contained weapons left over from Israel’s war against Hezbollah.

Israel and Hezbollah fought a 34-day war in 2006 that killed 1,200 Lebanese people and almost 160 Israelis. The United Nations negotiated a cease-fire that ended the conflict.
