MEMPHIS - From his birthplace in the southern U.S. city of Tupelo, Mississippi to Sydney, Australia, fans of legendary music star Elvis Presley are honoring him on what would have been his 75th birthday.
Presley’s former wife, Priscilla, and daughter, Lisa Marie, were presiding at a special ceremony at Graceland, the singer’s Memphis, Tennessee mansion. The event Friday featured a birthday cake in the singer’s honor.
Graceland is hosting days of events to mark the milestone birthday. Tours and special events are also planned at the modest Mississippi home where Elvis was born.
In Australia, an army of white-suited Presley impersonators boarded a special train in Sydney for an annual Elvis festival in the Australian Outback. Up to 10,000 people are attending this year’s festival at a small farm town in New South Wales, which includes five days of concerts, a parade and Elvis impersonator competitions.
Presley died in 1977 at the age of 42. The “King of Rock and Roll” continues to be a powerful presence in pop culture.
Forbes Magazine reports Presley’s estate earned $55 million between October 2008 and October 2009, more than current music acts Bon Jovi or Britney Spears grossed during the same period.
